I’m re-posting this in response to a Yahoo article saying most people who call themselves “Christians” are heretics – can I hear an “Amen!” somebody? No wonder – look at the teachings and the actions of the current pope (aka, the False Prophet) and liberal Protestant leaders.
The Pope and the Nicene Creed
“Buddhists in saffron robes, Muslims in bright hijabs and a conservative Jew in a blue-and-gold University of Michigan kippah gathered Friday at the foundations of the original World Trade Center to pray with the leader of the Roman Catholic church….” by Tamara Audi, The Wall Street Journal, September 26, 2015
The Roman Catholic Church may not agree with the veracity of Scripture, or that the Word of God we know as the Bible is sufficient for genuine faith. But they do agree with one thing: the statement of faith stated as part of every Mass they celebrate known as the Nicene Creed. There is no point in repeating the history of the Creed, or Constantine’s part in it. It is a distillation of the primary beliefs of the Christian faith. Even though it is not Scripture (so it could be flawed), it is a clear statement as to what we must believe in if we are believers in Jesus (Yeshua ha Mashiach). One thing is for sure: this is central to what Roman Catholicism says it believes in. Every time I went to Mass, nearly every Sunday for the first 24 years of my life and frequently at least once a week in school (from 2nd grade to 12th grade), we repeated it every time. I still can recite it (although I occasionally get it confused with the similar Apostles’ Creed). I can say that I believe it now more profoundly than I did as a faithful Catholic. Let’s examine it – does the pope believe it?
We believe (I believe) in one God,
Does the pope believe this? Well, he thinks it’s OK to have fellowship with those who believe in many gods (the Hindus, for example) or no god (Buddhists). He’ll have a tough time reconciling many of those “religionists” he has continually embraced since he’s been pope. What does Scripture say?
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
3 “You shall have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20: 2)
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one, 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. (Deuteronomy 6:4 – 5)
Sounds pretty clear to me…
the Father Almighty,
Jesus referred to Him as “Abba Father” – or Daddy. What do the Scriptures say?
13 Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.”[And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’” (Exodus 3: 13 – 14)
His covenant name, as best that can be transliterated from the Hebrew, is “Yahweh”.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” (John 3: 16 – 21)
The name of the God we serve is Yahweh (His covenant name), or Elohim, (meaning the All-Powerful One). He can’t be the same as Allah, because this is what Zechariah prophesies about Yahweh (translated “LORD”):
“Run, say to that young man, ‘Jerusalem shall be inhabited as villages without walls, because of the multitude of people and livestock in it. 5 And I will be to her a wall of fire all around, declares the Lord, and I will be the glory in her midst.’”
6 Up! Up! Flee from the land of the north, declares the Lord. For I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heavens, declares the Lord. 7 Up! Escape to Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon. 8 For thus said the Lord of hosts, after his glory sent me to the nations who plundered you, for he who touches you touches the apple of his eye: 9 “Behold, I will shake my hand over them, and they shall become plunder for those who served them. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me. (Zechariah 2: 4 – 6)
The nation of Israel are told, as they are coming back from exile in Babylon, that they have Yahweh’s protection – they are the apple of His eye. The meaning is that touching His Chosen People – the Jewish people – is like touching His very eyeball – He will not take that lightly! Yahweh still loves His People – and that’s why modern Gentile believers should, too. Paul says he would give up his own salvation, if by doing so, Israel could be saved as a nation:
I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen. (Romans 9: 1 – 5).
I don’t think the pope’s Muslim co-religionists would agree with THESE Scriptures! Does Allah claim that ISRAEL is the apple of HIS eye?
maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.
The pope has stated previously that he believes in evolution. There are many, many Scriptures we could go to, but the very first verse is sufficient: (the name of “God” here is Elohim) –
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
Look at the very first words the Apostle John used to write his gospel – carefully chosen words in 96 AD, many years after the events, but clear in his mind:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1: 1 – 5)
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, and born of the Father before all ages. (God of God) light of light, true God of true God. Begotten not made, consubstantial to the Father,
Do his religionist friends believe those things about Jesus? You can read John 3:16 and following about that makes it abundantly clear who Jesus is. Nobody but another “Christian” (if there were any) would “agree”.
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6)
“… if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” (Romans 10: 9 – 11)
That says it pretty clearly. Do you think the other religionists believe that, with the pope?
by whom all things were made.
In John 1 above, also in Colossians 1:
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by] him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together (Colossians 1: 15 – 17)
Do you think his friends would agree? Come to think of it, I don’t think the pope himself believes that Jesus is the Creator, or that He holds the whole universe together.
Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven. And was incarnate of the Holy Ghost and of the Virgin Mary and was made man;
Do his friends believe that only Jesus was Virgin born? Do they know what is meant by salvation, according to the Bible?
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:12)
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
23 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us).(Matthew 1: 22 – 23 )
was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate,
13 I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession,…” (1 Timothy 6: 13 )
suffered and was buried;
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, (1 Peter 3:18)
and the third day rose again according to the Scriptures.
This is the heart of the gospel: do the other religionists believe it?
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. (1 Corinthians 15: 3 – 10)
And ascended into heaven, sits at the right hand of the Father, and shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead, of whose Kingdom there shall be no end. And (I believe) in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and Giver of life, who proceeds from the Father (and the Son), who together with the Father and the Son is to be adored and glorified, who spoke by the Prophets. And one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. We confess (I confess) one baptism for the remission of sins. And we look for (I look for) the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.”
I don’t think his religionist friends would agree with ANY of this!
What I don’t see are: global warming; helping the poor; uniting all religions; no capital punishment, environmentalism; Marxism… nothing the pope has been talking about. Not that the Bible doesn’t teach that we should help the poor – we should, as individuals, not as human governments.
How about this? Here’s what is missing from the pope’s own Catholic theology, even though this is the clear word of Scripture:
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.(Ephesians 2: 9 – 10)
The gospel is this: we are saved by the grace of Yahweh. There are no works we can do to earn our way to heaven. Jesus, “true God of true God”, lived a sinless life and allowed Himself to die a bloody, disgraceful death by Roman crucifixion, so that anyone who honestly sincerely believes that will be saved. He said “Repent, and believe the gospel.” And also believe that He conquered death by rising gloriously from the grave! Praise Abba Father for His infinite provision! Religion without truth is the surest road to eternal destruction!
23 Take care, lest you forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make a carved image, the form of anything that the Lord your God has forbidden you. 24 For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. (Deuteronomy 4: 23 – 24)
Yahweh is the only true God. He does not accept competition!
