The Cubs’ 84-Year Curse is Over!
November 2, 2016
The long, long wait.
The Chicago Cubs National League Baseball Team will, at long last, after One Hundred and Eight Years, win the whole ball o’ wax. They will, for the first time since 1908, when the infield was still “Tinker-to-Evers-to Chance”… when their ace was named “Mordecai” – Mordecai Peter Centennial Brown… also known as “Three-Finger” Brown… and their catcher was the same since 1902, for seven seasons of excellence, Johnny Kling, who was also, not coincidently, Jewish… who the Cubs were cursed for not signing in 1909, causing their team leader to stay out of Major League Baseball for the whole season, coming back in 1910, but never regaining his All-Star form… will win it all once again tonight.
I’ve known the Cubs were going to win since about this time last year. In fact, I thought they would win in 2015. They didn’t, probably, because their 70-year “No World Series Babylonian Exile” was either just ending, or because their 84-year “Curse of the Bambino” was not yet over. Or… the Lord didn’t allow it because a “Back To The Future” movie had (jokingly) predicted that the Cubs would finally win it all in 2015. HE wants the credit – not some Hollywood movie.
And that’s the point of all of this, isn’t it? The purpose underlying all of this is to give God the glory He deserves. I take no credit – I’m a sign reader. The Lord, Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (or, as He’s named in Hebrew-Aramaic, Yeshua ha Mashiach) is the One who is in charge, not me. He is the One who aligns the universe; HE is the sovereign One who knows the end from the beginning.
He wants us to know that He is Lord over everything – He controls it all by His Providence. Look at it this way: if a Cubs fan could ask the Lord for anything, what would it be? For over a hundred years, Cubs’ fans have been saying, “Please, Lord – if You are all-powerful, do a miracle: let the Cubs win this year!”
It will be done! He IS the One who CAN work miracles – they happen every day. But this miracle is so amazing that we all can’t HELP but give Him credit for it.
It’s happened before! The 2004 Red Sox were down three games to NONE against the hated Yankees in the ALCS. NO team had EVER won a 7-game series after being down 3 games to NONE! But the Red Sox came back and won it all!
I also happened in 1955 to the Brooklyn Dodgers. They won their ONE and ONLY World Series (the same year they signed that young lefty… Jewish kid named Koufax). After years of frustration, the Dodgers FINALLY won it all – the “Curse of Lip Pike” was over! Joan Hodges, wife of Dodger first baseman Gil Hodges, prayed specifically to Jesus at the end of that game – her prayer was answered when Brooklyn won.
Most important of all, when it happens – The Lord gets all the glory! It was no billy goat – it was the Bambino’s Called Shot that was the sign.
