I wrote the following poem in the summer of 2000 when Randall Cunningham, one of my favorite Eagles’ players of all time (Reggie White being Number One), signed to play football for the hated Dallas Cowboys. None of the players mentioned could conceivably have played for the teams cited – every one was inconceivable at the time (and still are).
The link below is to the NFL Network program, “A Football Life: Randall Cunningham”, which I providentially saw recently. It’s so heart-warming to know that my favorite Eagles QB is now preaching the gospel of Jesus. What else is amazing is that this is something I’m sure Reggie White prayed for many times. If you haven’t seen this, make sure you watch it, whether you’re a football fan or not. Philadelphia fans should get all the references in the poem.
Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow!
The Sports World Upside Down
by Joe Scotto
Mays at home in Chavez Ravine?
Dr. J in Celtic green ?
Bobby Clarke in Ranger blue ?
Does that seem quite right to you ?
Reggie White, an Oakland Raider ?
Joe Paterno, Florida Gator ?
Lefty Steve, a Cincy Red ?
That’s a sight I would have dread !
Mike Schmidt for the Mets at third ?
Iverson playin’ for Larry Bird ?
Bob the Hound an L. A. King ?
I cannot conceive the thing !
Yankee pinstripes for the Splinter ?
Bednarik in a Giant winter ?
I thought I’d never see the day,
But Randall’s wearin’ Cowboy gray !
Written in commemoration on Randall Cunningham signing with the Dallas Cowboys in the summer of 2000.
