Yeah – I know the date. I just thought my new readers would appreciate what I posted before the 2015 Super Bowl. If you don’t know who Katy Perry is – read this. If you do: stay away from her music – it can only hurt your spiritual condition. I’ve heard that she’s been “struggling with her own demons” lately – well, the first lie to that is that she owns any demons. The truth is: they own her. She has deliberately allowed them into her life. It’s an awful price to pay… I pray for her to come out from them – Jesus cast out many demons during His earthly ministry; He can do it now – if she’s willing. Just – don’t pass her off as “For the Children” – she is the exactly what the children of America… the children of the WORLD … don’t need!
I, for one, am boycotting the Super Bowl half-time show. Now, that’s actually nothing new for me – I have NEVER watched a Super Bowl half-time show. I don’t even remember watching it when it was marching bands. Actually, they probably didn’t show the marching bands in those days; half-time was a normal length, with first-half highlights and analysis, with a lot of commercials. The game wasn’t extended to about 8 hours or so to get in as many commercials as possible like it is today. But the game was (and should be) the attraction, not the half-time show. That should be a giant “Who cares?” But, as we all know, it’s something like hosting the Oscars or the Grammy’s.
I’m boycotting it because of who it is this year – if you really don’t know, it’s Katy Perry (and some guy named Lenny Kravitz). I usually call her Katy “For the Children” Perry, because she’s often introduced that way, especially since she was the lead act to perform “For the Children” (to quote Dave Barry, I’m not making this up!) at the Young People’s Inaugural Ball (or whatever they called it) in 2012. They made a big deal about the fact that she was there to “entertain” the President’s daughters and a couple hundred of their friends. “Good Morning America” had this contest a year or two ago where Katy Perry promised to do a special concert at the school that did the best video to one of her songs.
“Well, she’s popular – what’s wrong with that?” If you have to ask, either you’ve never listened to her lyrics, or seen her perform, whether on video or in a concert. Here are the lyrics to her number one hit in 2011, which, much as I tried to avoid it, I heard over, and over, and over that summer: [NOTE: This is the only thing I deleted from the original essay. I can’t spread her poison – if you don’t know the words, you’ll have to look them up yourself…back to 2015].
Again – for those of you who don’t know, this giant hit called “T.G.I.F: Last Friday Night,” openly advocates so many immoral behaviors it’s hard to catalog. An incomplete list would include: getting so drunk that you have memory lapses; serious vandalism; underage drinking; driving while intoxicated; casual sexual relations (while intoxicated – should somebody call Gloria Allred?); getting arrested (and having a warrant out for getting arrested); destruction of property; perverse sexual relations; public indecency (in at least two ways); absenteeism from work… and so on, with a flippant attitude toward it all – “Oh, well!” It’s all presented in a package that is just so much fun! And we wonder why so many young people act the way they do. This is just one of her songs… and she’s just one pop star that gets away with all of this “For the Children”.
“Aw – she’s just kiddin’!” they say. “She doesn’t really mean it?” Really? She means the OPPOSITE of what she’s singing about? “She doesn’t REALLY advocate debauchery – it’s all an act.” OK, that makes a lot of sense: when kids (her primary audience!) hear her, they’re encouraged to seek a righteous lifestyle… stay away from drugs and alcohol… stay sexually pure until they’re married… respect other people’s property… be good stewards of the resources that have been bestowed on them by a gracious and loving God… ? Uh… no, I didn’t think so, either.
And that’s not all! On the Grammy’s last year, she put on a show that looked all the world like a Satanic ritual. But… naw, she was just kiddin’ with that, too, right? She REALLY wants kids to seek to know the Messiah by studying His Word – right? It really wasn’t SATAN she was honoring, it was GOD. It only LOOKED like she was openly worshipping the Great Deceiver – oh, no! The message we should have gotten was to love God and love our neighbor… right?
Anyway – I’m boycotting the half-time show at this year’s Super Bowl. I encourage all of you: if you really want to strike a blow at the rushing tide of immorality washing across this once great nation, don’t watch it. So what if you miss “what everybody will be talking about at work the next day.” If you care, it’ll be on YouTube seconds after it’s over – whatever fresh outrage she pulls. Don’t watch it! Turn off the TV! Watch alternative programs! Put in a DVD of something worthwhile and wholesome – it’ll be a while before they get back to the game. Sit around and talk! Go outside and take a walk around your neighborhood (if it’s not too cold… or dark, for those of us on the East Coast). Sing some worship songs with a piano, or a keyboard, or a guitar! Just sit quietly and read a good book! E-mail your friends; discuss what you thought of the first half.
Just do SOMETHING else! Refuse to contribute to the continued degeneration of the culture! We are still free NOT TO WATCH! Use your precious American Freedom to not be bound to whatever the dark side throws at us. One more thing: it wouldn’t hurt to use that time to seek a quiet place and pray for these United States.
