What to do: April 10, 2016
This is apparently apocryphal, which is an old-fashioned way of saying it’s an urban legend, but it is certainly instructive: there was a story told about a rich Australian in the 1930’s who was fed up with people. The world was in the Great Depression… there were war clouds on the horizon. He just wanted to get as far away from everybody else in the world as possible. He decided to use his great wealth to buy property on an island that was as remote as it could be.
The name of the island?
A little out-of-the-way place called….
Yes, that’s right – the place where a long, bloody battle took place during World War II.
Whether that story is actually true or not is not really the point. The point is that there’s really no simple way to plan for an unknown future. You can make your best guess, but you can’t be sure.
I was reminded of this when I heard some people talking about the coming crash in our country. There are some people stockpiling food; others recommend storing bottled water. Some people we call “survivalists” have been preparing to live “on their own” for years. Some say to “get off the grid” – in other words, be independent of the nation’s delivery of electricity. Some suggest we “go Amish” – to learn how to live like the Amish people: without modern conveniences, without cars, using generators for what electricity they do use; learning to live off the land, growing their own food, raising chickens for meat and eggs, and so on. Others recommend buying gold – lots and lots of gold… and silver, too, because paper money will become worthless.
Some say “Buy real estate – land has an intrinsic value.” Others say, “DON’T buy real estate – remember what happened when the ‘real estate bubble’ burst around 2007.” Some say, “Buy guns and ammunition – they’ll be very valuable when the police will no longer be able to protect us.” Others say, “Don’t buy guns and ammunition – the criminals will just steal them from us when society collapses.”
Some millionaires (who, yes, are hypocrites) are leaving cities like Chicago before the crash hits. Others say, “Move to the cities! That’s where the police will be; that’s where the most food will be.” Some say, “Move to a place like Singapore… or New Zealand!” Others say, “The whole world will go down if we go down! There will be NO safe place to be! You’ll be worse off, because people will watch out for themselves and their own people first – “let the foreigners STARVE!”
I’m sorry if all this is depressing – well, it should be.
Because… they know.
Satan and his minions – the evil world system… the “powers that be” … aka the Illuminati, the Bilderbergs, the New World Order people… George Soros… the mainstream media… the globalists… THAT cabal – they know.
“WHAT do they know?”
Everything YOU know.
They know that lots of us who know the crash is coming are buying gold. They know we’re stockpiling food and water. They know we’re storing guns and ammunition. They know there are some of us who think we can run away to – wherever. They know… It’s just like atheists and agnostics who think they’re smarter than Elohim – that’s absurd, but that’s what they think. WE think we can outsmart the devil!
It’s foolish for us to try. He was created as the greatest of all the angels. He’s been a deceiver from the beginning; his “cleverness” tricked Adam and Eve into sinning, and that was when they had perfect minds! He’s not only intelligent, but he’s got centuries of experience with humans. We’re not going to out-smart him. We’re no match for him, in our own strength.
“Do you mean we should fight against Satan?”
No – we NEED to fight him. Just not with our OWN wisdom, with our OWN intelligence, or with our OWN strength.
“Then how should we fight him.”
With HIS wisdom, intelligence, and strength!
Well, here’s where we run into that dichotomy. If you are a believer in the Savior, Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, you have the means to battle with Satan. He’s the One Jesus promised would be with us – those who have repented and have put our faith completely in Him. He’s called the Holy Spirit, or “Ruach ha Khodesh” in Hebrew. He is the One who indwells those of us who the Scriptures refer to as “saved,” He is the One who enables us to live the life of a believer in Jesus. He’s the One who gives us the power we need to walk the walk of faith in Jesus. He illuminates the Word, so our feeble minds can understand it. He opens our eyes to see Satan’s lies clearly. He gives us understanding so that we can do battle with our adversary. We can only win with the Spirit’s wisdom, the Spirit’s intelligence, and the Spirit’s strength.
“Why doesn’t EVERYBODY do that, then?”
The offer of salvation is to all humans. Jesus said it simply: “Repent and believe the gospel.” If any person honestly and humbly goes to Jesus in prayer – that can be done anywhere; He’s right wherever we are – and admits that they are a sinner, they have repented. Then, if that same person puts their trust in the good news (or gospel), Jesus promised that He would hear that prayer and that person will be saved! The gospel is simply this: that Jesus the Messiah – in Hebrew, Yeshua ha Mashiach – was God in human flesh, the only God-man who ever lived… that He lived a perfectly sinless life, keeping the Jewish Law as perfectly as any person has ever kept it… that He became the “Lamb of God” by allowing Himself to be falsely accused of a capital crime and be subjected to execution by Roman crucifixion (the required bloody death of a sacrifice)… that He died, the only person who ever lived who didn’t deserve to die… that He was laid in a tomb that is today empty because He rose from the dead, sealing His victory over sin and death… and that, by repenting and believing these things, anyone can have everlasting life – in other words, be saved to live forever with Yeshua and all other believers!
“So everyone has to join a church to be safe?”
It has nothing to do with “joining a church.” A building never saved anyone. Even “joining the club” never saved anyone, if they don’t “repent and believe the gospel.”
“So what about people who aren’t Christians?”
You mean people who won’t repent and believe the gospel? They’re on their own. Salvation is a free gift, offered to every single human being. But Elohim doesn’t force people into the kingdom. At least from our perspective, it’s a free choice. The gift is offered freely to everyone,
“What about Hindus, Buddhists, and Moslems?”
This is not about religion. NO religion is acceptable to Elohim, not even “Christianity” if it’s not genuine. Religion is man’s attempts to reach God – and every religion fails to do that.
There are many people who claim to be Christians who are not. True faith is not a “religion”. You can’t do enough good works to earn God’s favor. True faith in Jesus the Messiah – or “Messianic faith” – is God – that is, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, who goes by the names of Elohim, Yahweh, or, as Jesus referred to Him, Abba Father – reaching out to humans. John 3:16 says it clearly: “For God (Yahweh) so loved the world (that include all of us) that He gave His one-and-only Son, that ANYBODY who believes in Him will have everlasting life.” All we can do is “repent and believe the gospel.” The work of redemption has already been done.
“So what do we do?”
First of all – get saved! It’s pointless to build our “sand castles” if they are going to be destroyed. Remember the parable Jesus told about the rich fool? The guy who had a tremendous harvest, but instead of planning to share his blessings, he selfishly decides to build bigger barns to keep the abundance to HIMSELF? Jesus called him a fool because the man was going to die that night. He would never have the opportunity to “eat, drink, and be merry,” because he wouldn’t be around.
We should not put our faith in ourselves. We should not put our faith and trust on ANYTHING in this world. We need to put our faith in the One who promised us that He would supply all of our needs, wherever we were. Jesus said it so clearly in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 6:
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[g] 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
If you ARE saved, then trust those promises. He will provide ALL of our needs if we just trust in Him. I can’t tell you whether or not to do the things people are doing – our plan always must start with prayer. Whatever the Holy Spirit leads you to do, that’s what you should do. And don’t fear! He is always in charge! He will never leave you or forsake you!
